The Process
Each piece created by Triple W Woodworks starts by selecting the perfect piece of wood.
Whether you’re looking for a beautiful sign or cross to display in your home or a functional attention-getter like a cheese board or serving tray, you can trust that you’re getting a product of superior craftsmanship.
Once the wood is selected, Wes uses a consistent and trusted multi-step process to make his vision your reality
Step 1: Wes picks out two or three pieces of wood and begins the planing process by shaving thin layers off to reveal the true beauty of the wood. Once he sees what the inside of the wood looks like he picks the piece that is best for the product he’s creating.
Step 2: Now that the right piece of wood has been chosen, Wes finishes planing and begins sanding. He sands it down to 150 grit which is a rough sand that makes it smooth enough to cut. Then he squares up each side with a ruler.
Step 3: When making a custom sign, he hand-traces each letter and drills holes to prepare for cutting, then cuts each letter using a scroll saw. He removes the ink by sanding and then routes the edges based on the shape of the piece.
Step 4: The piece is finally ready for full sanding. Wes sands it down to a 220 grit, which continues to smooth the wood, then observes it for scratches. If he is happy with where it is, he will sand it down to a 320 grit. This finishes the sanding process and makes the wood smooth.
Step 5: The final step is to apply the stain and varnish. If the wood used is Black Walnut only varnish is added and no stain due to the natural beauty of the wood. After the first application of varnish dries, Wes uses steel wool to complete the piece, then adds one more coat of varnish for protection. If the item is for food products, it’s buffed and then finished with an all-natural food grade oil.
